My Reading Philosophy

At FUN-damental Learning, I believe reading is far more than a skill — it is a spark. It is a moment when a child realizes the world is bigger, brighter, and filled with possibilities they can access on their own.
For more than twenty five years, I have poured my heart into helping children discover that spark. My approach blends strong, structured literacy instruction with warmth, encouragement, and an unwavering belief in every learner.
I am not just a reading teacher — I am a coach, a guide, and a cheerleader. I teach children the tools and strategies they need, but I also help them believe in themselves, celebrate progress, and experience the joy of learning. My goal is to make reading feel exciting, empowering, and absolutely possible.
I am endlessly curious and committed to continuous learning. I study the Science of Reading, structured literacy practices, and evolving best practices because children deserve instruction that is caring and strong, warm and evidence-informed. I never stop growing — because the more I learn, the more I can give.

I Believe:

⭐ Every child can learn to read.
With clear instruction, encouragement, the right tools, and someone who believes in them, every child can grow in ways they never imagined.
⭐ Reading should be joyful, not overwhelming.
Success early and often creates excitement, energy, and forward momentum.
⭐ Instruction must be strong and rooted in science.
My lessons are explicit, systematic, multisensory, and purposeful.
⭐ Confidence fuels progress.
Children learn best when they feel safe, supported, and celebrated.
⭐ Families are essential partners.
I value open communication, shared goals, and collaborative problem solving.
⭐ I am committed to lifelong learning.
My growth elevates my students’ growth — and I take that responsibility seriously.

How it Works

The first step they take towards the solution

The second step they take towards the solution

Their final step. Ideally this is already the outcome.

WHAT PARENTS ARE SAYING

Real stories of growth, confidence, and academic success

"My grandson, Linus, was tutored by Mrs. Koeppen this past winter. He was six years old, could read only a few words, and was unable to write his full name despite attending a reputable school. Within a month of tutoring, Linus was writing full sentences and reading phonetic paper books with ease.

Mrs. Koeppen has great skill in diagnosis and targets instruction in a way that made Linus excited to return each week. He was so eager to learn with Mrs. Koeppen that his older sister, a capable reader, begged to join tutoring as well. They both adored her and learned extensively from her talented and caring approach."

Dr. Patricia Antony

“Mrs. Lisa was a phenomenal help in meeting our son where he was in his reading and academic journey. She helped him get caught up, learn new skills, and truly excel in his schoolwork.

Over more than two years, she worked alongside him with patience, encouragement, and expertise, helping to grow his confidence to the point where he now genuinely enjoys reading.

In his own words, ‘She’s very good, she’s fun, and I enjoyed going to see her weekly.’
We are so grateful for the positive impact Mrs. Lisa has had on his learning and confidence.”

Parent of a 3rd Grader

"Since working with Mrs. Koeppen, we have seen remarkable improvement in a short amount of time. Within just a couple of months, my son went up multiple reading levels. He also made significant progress in his writing skills and began reading chapter books at the start of first grade.

Mrs. Koeppen now works with both my children, and it has been a true joy to watch their confidence soar. They are both thriving academically. Thank you, Mrs. Koeppen!”

Parent of a 1st & 3rd Grader

“My child now loves reading — something I never thought I’d hear.”
