About Lisa Koeppen

Reading Tutor & Structured-Literacy Educator

Hi, I’m Lisa, and I’m so glad you’re here.

If you’re visiting this page, chances are your child is struggling with reading. Maybe they are guessing at words, avoiding books, or starting to say things like, “I’m not good at reading.”

And maybe you are the parent doing everything you can. You are Googling solutions, talking with teachers, and trying to help at home, but nothing seems to stick.

I understand that feeling deeply. My own son struggled as a beginning reader. He said he did not like reading, refused to practice, and even pretended to read just to get by. As a teacher, it was confusing and heartbreaking to realize I did not have the tools to help him in the way he needed. He did not qualify for intervention, and I began to see how many other children were slipping through the cracks too.

Again and again, I was told, “They are not low enough for intervention,” as if students had to fall even further behind before they could qualify for help. Meanwhile, I watched bright, capable children lose confidence and motivation because they were not getting the kind of instruction they needed.

That experience changed everything. I committed myself to learning how children truly learn to read. I studied structured literacy, trained in evidence based methods, and continued adding tools to my practice so I could help children like my son, and yours, find a new path forward.

I created FUN-damental Learning to offer the kind of clear and caring support I saw so many students and their families truly need.

My Mission

I believe every child deserves to feel successful as a reader. That’s why my approach combines structured, science-backed instruction with patient, individualized support.

My goal is to make reading feel possible — even joyful — for children who need more than just extra practice. And to help parents feel supported, hopeful, and informed along the way.

My Background & Experience

I’ve spent my career supporting early readers, developing readers, and children who need step-by-step, explicit instruction to thrive. I hold degrees in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education and maintain current teaching and administrative licenses in Wisconsin.

For over 25 years, I’ve taught students from 4K through 6th grade — in classrooms, early childhood programs, and one-on-one tutoring settings. I’ve taught every foundational reading skill: phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and early writing.

I bring a deep understanding of child development, literacy best practices, and the emotional side of learning, which helps me meet students where they are and guide them forward, one clear step at a time.

How I Teach

My approach is rooted in structured literacy — a method grounded in the science of how the brain learns to read. That means instruction is:

- Clear and explicit

- Predictable and systematic

- Multisensory and engaging

- Strength-based and emotionally supportive

Each session is tailored to the child in front of me — their strengths, needs, and pace. I work online with students in grades K through 6, creating a safe, supportive learning space that helps them build both skills and confidence.

Above all, I believe in celebrating progress. Every step forward matters.

My Training & Tools

I continuously invest in professional learning so I can give students the very best support. My training includes:

- UFLI Foundations

- LETRS-aligned professional learning

- Orton-Gillingham–aligned coursework

- Elite Reading Coach Academy certification

- Multisensory literacy strategies

- Dyslexia-friendly instructional practices

- Structured literacy lesson design for online tutoring

These tools allow me to create targeted, effective instruction that helps struggling readers, including those with characteristics of dyslexia, make steady, meaningful progress.

What I Believe

- Every child can learn to read with the right support

- Confidence grows through connection, clarity, and little wins

- Reading is more than a skill — it’s a gateway to independence

- Parents deserve clear communication and consistent guidance
